Locksmith License

Also known as: locksmith license California

A separate BSIS license for individuals or businesses that perform locksmith services, including access-control and rekeying work.

Locksmiths in California must be licensed through BSIS, a category separate from private patrol operator or guard licensing, though some security-focused companies offer both physical guard services and locksmith or access-control installation work under related but distinct licenses.

For a Sacramento apartment community or HOA, this distinction matters when arranging for rekeying after a tenant turnover, lock upgrades, or access control system installation, since the work should be performed by a properly licensed locksmith rather than an unlicensed handyman or general contractor.

Verifying a locksmith's license is a similar process to verifying a guard or PPO license, using BSIS's public license search tool, and it is a reasonable step before granting someone access to master key systems or building-wide locking hardware.

Some larger security companies bundle locksmith and access-control services into a broader physical security offering, but each service line remains subject to its own specific licensing requirements under California law.
