Guard Registration Renewal

Also known as: guard card renewal, security guard registration renewal

The periodic process by which a security officer's BSIS guard card must be renewed to remain valid for continued employment.

A California security guard registration, commonly called a guard card, is issued for a set term and must be renewed before it expires or the individual is no longer legally permitted to work as a security officer. Renewal typically requires an updated application and fee, and BSIS runs a continuing background check against the individual's criminal history.

On an active Sacramento property, a lapsed guard card means the officer standing post is technically unlicensed, which exposes both the security company and, indirectly, the client to liability if an incident occurs during that period. Reputable patrol companies track renewal dates closely so no gaps occur.

Guard cards can be renewed somewhat in advance of expiration, and BSIS provides online tools for both licensees and the public to check status. Property managers with ongoing contracts can periodically spot-check a handful of assigned guards' card status as part of routine vendor oversight.

If a renewal application is delayed by a pending background check issue, an officer may be required to stop working until it clears, which can create staffing gaps that clients should be informed about promptly by their contracted security firm.
