Design-based access control versus electronic access control

Natural access control is a physical design principle: a site should have one clearly identifiable main entrance rather than several ambiguous ones, walkways and driveways should funnel visitors along an intended route, and landscaping or low barriers should discourage shortcuts through areas not meant for through-traffic, such as cutting between buildings or across a fence line into a neighboring lot. This is distinct from, and complementary to, electronic access control hardware — keycard readers, gate codes, and intercoms — which is a technology layer covered separately on our security technology hub.

A well-designed site makes it obvious to anyone watching, including a patrol officer, when a person departs from the expected path — approaching a back fence rather than the main gate, or walking along a building's side rather than its front walkway. That deviation is a low-cost, high-value observation point precisely because natural access control has narrowed the range of 'normal' movement patterns to make abnormal ones stand out.

Multifamily and commercial sites commonly combine both layers: a single main vehicle entrance funneled through a gate (natural access control) that also requires a code or credential (electronic access control), with secondary pedestrian gates limited in number and either locked or monitored. Too many unmonitored secondary access points — a common issue in older apartment complexes with perimeter fencing installed piecemeal over the years — undermines both layers at once.

Natural access control design checkpoints

  • Identify and clearly mark a single primary entrance rather than leaving multiple ambiguous entry points.
  • Use landscaping, low fencing, or bollards to discourage cutting across lawns, planters, or between buildings.
  • Limit the number of secondary/pedestrian gates and keep them locked or monitored where possible.
  • Align walkway lighting and signage with the intended route so the 'correct' path is also the most comfortable one to use.
  • Review perimeter fencing periodically for gaps, cut sections, or unofficial paths worn into landscaping.

Where patrol observation fits

Even well-funneled sites eventually have someone tailgate through a gate, prop a door, or hop a low fence. Patrol officers checking gates, doors, and perimeter conditions during scheduled rounds catch the physical failures — a propped door, a broken gate arm, a worn shortcut path — that natural access control design assumes will not happen but sometimes does, feeding those findings back to ownership as a maintenance or design item rather than letting them persist unnoticed.
