Post Commander

The officer in charge of a single large post or site, responsible for coordinating other officers and reporting to the account manager.

A post commander runs the day-to-day security operation at one large site — a hospital campus, a mixed-use tower, or a big-box distribution center — where enough officers work simultaneously that someone on-site needs authority to assign posts, approve breaks, and make real-time calls. The title is a site-level role, not a BSIS license category; the person holding it still needs the same guard card and any required firearm permit as any other officer, plus the employer's own designation of the position.

On a real Sacramento-area campus, the post commander typically arrives before the bulk of the shift, reviews the pass-down log from the previous commander, checks that posts are staffed against the deployment plan, and handles the first call on anything unusual — a medical event, a vendor dispute, a tenant complaint — before deciding whether it needs to go up to the account manager or outside emergency services. They also field walk-up questions from property management that a line officer isn't positioned to answer.

The role commonly breaks down when a post commander is given authority without the standing to use it — line officers who were peers last month resent taking direction from a newly named commander, or the client site expects the commander to also cover a post themselves, which removes them from the oversight function the title exists to provide. A post commander who is also filling a gate or lobby post for eight hours cannot simultaneously supervise the rest of the site.

In a well-run deployment, the post commander owns the daily activity report roll-up, signs off on the shift's incident reports before they go to the account manager, and runs the shift briefing so every officer starts the day knowing the same priorities.
