Photometric Lighting Plan

An engineered diagram showing predicted light levels across a site, used to design or evaluate a property's lighting.

A photometric lighting plan is a technical drawing, usually produced with specialized software, that models expected foot-candle levels across a property based on fixture type, mounting height, spacing, and output. Developers submit these plans during permitting for new construction, and existing properties can commission one to evaluate whether current lighting meets recommended levels.

On a real property, a photometric plan is only as accurate as its inputs — fixture output can differ from manufacturer specifications after years of use, and vegetation growth after installation is rarely re-modeled. A plan approved at construction may no longer reflect actual conditions a decade later.

Properties sometimes treat an approved photometric plan as a one-time compliance checkbox rather than an ongoing target, missing gradual degradation from burned-out fixtures or unaddressed dark zones that a resident or officer would notice long before a formal review catches it.

In a patrol program, officer feedback on dark or uneven areas during night rounds is a practical, low-cost supplement to formal photometric review, and consistent reports from the same location support a business case for updating the lighting plan or fixture placement.
