A mobile access credential is a digital version of an access card or fob stored in a smartphone app, communicating with a reader over Bluetooth or NFC to unlock a door, gate, or elevator. Property managers can issue and revoke these credentials remotely without needing to physically collect a lost card.
On a real property, mobile credentials are convenient for residents who already carry their phone everywhere, but they depend on the phone having battery charge and the app installed and logged in — a dead phone at the gate is a common resident complaint. Bluetooth range and reader compatibility vary by manufacturer, occasionally causing inconsistent unlock distances.
Shared or forwarded credentials are harder to control than with a physical card, since a resident could technically pass their phone's access to someone else, similar to lending a key. System outages on the vendor's cloud platform can also lock out an entire property's mobile credentials at once if the app depends on an internet connection to function.
In a patrol program, an officer checking access logs may see mobile credential use alongside physical fob and code entries, and unusual access patterns — entry at odd hours or from an unrecognized device — can prompt a follow-up walk-through or note in the incident report.
