A keypad and PIN code system requires entering a numeric code at a mounted pad to unlock a door or gate, often used alongside or instead of a card reader at pedestrian and vehicle gates. Codes can be assigned per resident or unit, or shared as a single community code that changes periodically.
On a real property, shared community codes are convenient but weak from a security standpoint since they spread quickly beyond authorized residents; individual PINs tracked per person are more accountable but require more administrative upkeep. Weather exposure can wear down keypad buttons, sometimes leaving visibly worn digits that hint at the code to an observant outsider.
Shoulder-surfing, where someone watches a resident enter their code, and outdated codes left active after a move-out are common failure points. Keypads also do nothing to confirm the person entering the code is the authorized user, unlike a credential tied to an individual with photo ID on file.
In a patrol program, officers may periodically test that community codes still function and note keypad damage or exposed wiring during rounds, and unusual entry patterns tied to a specific code can be flagged in reporting for the property manager to review.
