Intercom / Call Box

A fixed audio or video device at an entrance or remote area that lets a visitor or resident reach staff or a monitoring center.

An intercom or call box is a fixed unit — often at a gated entrance, a stairwell, or a remote parking area — that connects a caller to on-site staff, a leasing office, or a remote monitoring center by pressing a button, sometimes with video in addition to audio. Visitor entry systems let a guest reach a resident who can remotely unlock the gate or door.

On a real property, intercoms depend on reliable power and, for networked units, internet connectivity; a unit that loses connection defaults to being unusable exactly when someone needs it most, such as during an emergency at a remote lot. Outdoor units also face weather exposure and vandalism given their public-facing mounting.

Poor audio quality in noisy outdoor settings, buttons that stick after heavy use, and outdated resident directories that no longer match current occupants are common everyday issues that make an intercom less useful than intended. A call box wired to a phone number that is no longer monitored provides a false sense of coverage.

In a patrol program, an emergency call box connected to a monitoring center functions much like a duress button, generating a dispatch to a patrol officer, and officers should test call boxes periodically during rounds and report any that fail to connect.
