Floodlight Camera

A combination fixture pairing a bright motion-activated light with a built-in camera at one mounting point.

A floodlight camera combines a motion-activated light fixture with a camera in a single housing, commonly mounted above entrances, breezeways, or parking areas at apartment communities and HOAs. Triggering the light and the recording together aims to both deter and document activity in one device.

On a real property, effectiveness depends on the light's coverage angle matching the camera's field of view; a light that illuminates one side of a walkway while the camera faces another leaves the recorded footage underlit. Placement height also matters — too high reduces facial detail, too low invites tampering.

Frequent triggering from passing cars, wind-blown branches, or foot traffic on a busy walkway can wear down the motion sensor's usefulness and annoy residents if not tuned properly. Bulb or LED failure is a common maintenance gap since the fixture blends into general property lighting rather than being tracked as security equipment.

In a patrol program, floodlight camera footage is one more source an officer or supervisor pulls when compiling an incident report, and a burned-out unit found during rounds should be logged as a maintenance item so it is not mistaken for functioning coverage.
