Body-Worn Camera

A body-worn camera (BWC) clips to an officer's chest or collar and records video, and usually audio, of encounters during a shift. Contract security officers on Sacramento-area properties increasingly wear them to document gate disputes, trespass warnings, and use-of-force incidents. Footage is typically uploaded automatically to a cloud or on-premise evidence system at the end of a shift rather than stored on the device long-term.

On a live property, a BWC works best paired with clear post orders describing when recording starts, since continuous recording of common areas raises privacy questions California property managers should discuss with counsel. Battery life, storage limits, and low-light performance are common constraints — a device rated for an eight-hour shift may fail earlier in cold weather or with frequent video review in the field.

Failure modes include officers forgetting to activate the camera, footage gaps from dead batteries, and audio recording rules that differ from video rules under California's two-party consent statute. None of this replaces a written incident report; the recording supports and corroborates the officer's documented account rather than standing alone as the record.

In a patrol program, BWC footage is reviewed by supervisors after flagged incidents and retained per a written retention schedule, then referenced in daily activity reports and incident reports so the property has both a narrative and, where available, video corroboration.
