Graveyard Campus Patrol Holds A Hallway Over A Rattlesnake

College campus graveyard patrol detail, Rocklin, 2014.

PPO #122730

First-hand account from Summit Force officer Brandon Muse. Client and property identities are withheld.

What happened

On a graveyard patrol of a college campus in Rocklin, Muse found a live rattlesnake moving through a classroom hallway inside an occupied building.

He called the local snake handler, who was not available at that hour.

That left one real question: leave the building unsafe for whoever opened it in the morning, or stand the hallway for the rest of the shift.

How it was handled — step by step

  1. 1

    Contain, don't engage

No attempt was made to move or capture a venomous animal. The hallway was isolated and kept under continuous observation.

  2. 2

    Call the right specialist first

Animal control / the campus snake handler was contacted immediately, before the officer committed to holding the post.

  3. 3

    Hold the safe perimeter

With no handler available, he kept eyes on the snake and the hallway approaches for the remainder of the shift so no one could walk into it.

  4. 4

    Brief the relief officer

At shift change, position and behavior of the animal were handed off in person rather than left in a report nobody would read until morning.

Outcome

At shift change the snake was safely captured and released away from campus.

No students, faculty, or staff were exposed, and the building opened on schedule.
