Training Facility / Instructor Certification

Also known as: certified training facility, BSIS training school certification

BSIS approval required for schools and instructors that deliver mandatory security guard and firearms training courses.

Organizations that provide the required Powers to Arrest, 40-hour skills, annual refresher, or weapons permit training must be certified by BSIS as an approved training facility, and the individual instructors delivering the courses must also hold instructor certification. This ensures a baseline consistency in how mandated training content is delivered statewide.

Some larger Sacramento-area PPOs operate their own certified in-house training programs, allowing them to train new hires directly rather than sending them to a third-party facility. Smaller companies more commonly rely on independent certified training schools.

For a client evaluating a security vendor, knowing whether the company trains its own staff through a certified in-house program versus outsourcing it can be a useful data point about the company's investment in consistent, property-relevant training content, though both models can be fully compliant.

BSIS periodically audits certified training facilities and instructors, and a facility that loses its certification can no longer legally issue completion certificates that satisfy state training requirements, which is why confirming current certification matters if a company references an unfamiliar training provider.
