A thermal (infrared) camera detects differences in surface heat rather than reflected light, which lets it spot a person or vehicle in complete darkness, fog, or light foliage where a standard camera would show nothing usable. Thermal units are often deployed on perimeter fence lines, remote yards, or construction sites without existing lighting.
On a real property, thermal cameras are strong at detection — noticing that something warm is present and moving — but weak at identification, since they generally cannot capture a legible face or license plate. They are frequently paired with a standard visible-light camera that a detection event can trigger to zoom in for a usable image.
Cost and lens resolution are the main practical limits; longer detection ranges typically require larger, more expensive lenses. Heat sources unrelated to security — sun-warmed pavement, HVAC exhaust, wildlife — can trigger false alerts if analytics thresholds are not tuned to the specific site.
In a patrol program, a thermal detection event functions much like an analytics alert: it can redirect a mobile patrol unit to investigate a perimeter breach, with the officer's physical check and report confirming or clearing the alert.
