Radio interoperability refers to the ability of a private security team's radios to communicate with, or at least coordinate alongside, local fire, police, or other emergency responders during a shared incident. Because private patrol frequencies and public safety frequencies are usually separate systems, true direct interoperability is limited and most coordination happens through a dispatcher relaying information by phone.
On a real property, this matters most during a major incident — a fire, an active threat, or a large medical emergency — when officers need to relay building layout, gate codes, or camera access to arriving responders quickly. Pre-established contact information and a written emergency plan often matter more than radio hardware itself.
A common gap is that private security radios simply cannot transmit on public safety frequencies, which are tightly regulated, so any expectation of direct radio-to-radio contact with police or fire needs to be verified in advance rather than assumed during an emergency.
In a patrol program, interoperability planning usually shows up as a written protocol: which phone number an officer calls, what information to relay, and where to meet arriving units, rehearsed during training rather than relying on radios alone.
