Mobile Patrol Officer

An officer who drives a marked or unmarked vehicle between multiple properties, checking each on a scheduled or randomized route.

A mobile patrol officer covers multiple sites during a single shift, typically small commercial properties, HOAs, or vacant lots that don't have enough activity to justify a full-time on-site officer but still want a periodic physical check. The officer drives a company vehicle, gets out to walk the property, checks specific things listed in the post orders — locked doors, working lights, no signs of forced entry — and logs the visit before moving to the next stop.

On a real Sacramento-area route, patrol timing matters more than most clients realize: a patrol that runs on a fixed, predictable schedule is far less effective as a deterrent than one that varies its timing and order, since anyone watching the property can learn a fixed pattern and act around it. Drive time between stops, traffic, and the number of properties on one officer's route all affect how much actual time is spent at each site versus simply driving.

The most common failure is an officer who checks the box on the log without physically getting out of the vehicle to inspect the property, sometimes called a 'drive-by' or 'windshield' check — it satisfies the paperwork but not the purpose. GPS or NFC tour-verification systems exist specifically because unverified logs have historically been easy to falsify.

A mobile patrol officer typically records each stop in a guard tour system, notes anything abnormal in a daily activity report, and calls the field supervisor or dispatcher immediately for anything beyond a routine observation rather than waiting until the end of the route.
