Lock-Up and Unlock Detail

A scheduled duty in which an officer secures or opens a facility at defined times, checking doors, windows, and alarm arming as part of the routine.

A lock-up and unlock detail is a scheduled duty tied to a facility's operating hours — an officer arrives before opening to unlock and disarm the building, or stays after closing to secure it and arm the alarm — common at retail centers, office buildings, and community amenity spaces like a clubhouse or pool area. It sounds routine, but it's one of the most consequential procedural tasks a post performs, since a single missed door or improperly armed alarm undermines the property's security for the entire period until the next check.

On a real lock-up round, the officer works through a specific checklist — every exterior door, ground-floor window, gate, and interior common area — rather than relying on memory, since a large property may have a dozen or more points to secure and skipping even one creates a real vulnerability that persists for hours. Unlock rounds carry a different risk: an officer arriving alone before dawn to open a building needs a procedure for what to do if something looks wrong — a propped door, a broken window — before entering, rather than walking straight in.

The most common failure is a checklist that exists but isn't actually followed point by point, especially on a route the officer has repeated hundreds of times and no longer looks at closely; complacency on a routine task is a well-documented failure mode across the industry precisely because the task feels too simple to warrant care.

A properly run lock-up or unlock detail uses a written checklist signed off or logged electronically for each point, flags any anomaly immediately rather than noting it only at shift's end, and treats an unexpectedly unlocked door or disarmed alarm found during rounds as an incident to investigate and report, not just something to quietly fix.
