Emergency Evacuation Marshal

An emergency evacuation marshal — sometimes called a fire warden or floor warden depending on the property — is designated in advance to direct building occupants to exits and confirm assigned areas are clear during an evacuation, whether triggered by a fire alarm, an earthquake, or another emergency. Security officers are commonly assigned this role in addition to their normal duties, since they're already positioned throughout the property and trained to remain calm and directive during an incident.

On a real evacuation, the marshal's job is specific and physical — walking an assigned area (a floor, a wing, a section of a large site), directing people to the nearest usable exit, checking restrooms and other spaces people might not hear an alarm from, and reporting to a designated assembly point coordinator that their area is clear or that someone was left behind. This only works if the marshal actually knows the building's layout and exits well enough to do it under stress, not just in a calm walkthrough during training.

A common failure is a marshal system that exists on paper — names assigned to areas in a binder — but where the designated people have never actually practiced the role, don't know their assigned area well, or aren't even on-site during the actual emergency due to shift changes or turnover since the assignments were last updated. An evacuation plan that hasn't been drilled tends to fall apart exactly when it's needed.

A properly run program keeps the marshal assignments current as staff and shifts change, runs periodic evacuation drills that actually exercise the marshal role rather than just testing whether the alarm sounds, and has each marshal report clearly to a single assembly-point coordinator so incident command — public safety, once they arrive — gets an accurate account of who is accounted for and who isn't.
