A checkpoint scanning system places NFC tags, QR codes, or barcodes at fixed points around a property — a stairwell, a mailroom, a rear gate — that an officer scans with a phone or handheld reader while on rounds. The scan timestamps the officer's presence at that exact location, which is a more specific record than GPS location alone.
On a real property, checkpoint placement should cover the areas that matter most: entrances, blind corners, amenity areas, and known problem spots rather than being spread evenly for convenience. A checkpoint too easy to reach from a single spot with a long-range scanner defeats the purpose of proving the officer physically walked the route.
Missed or skipped checkpoints are the main data point supervisors review, but a missed scan does not always mean a missed round — a malfunctioning tag or a dead phone battery can also cause a gap. Damaged or removed tags need periodic physical inspection, not just software monitoring.
In a patrol program, checkpoint data feeds directly into the guard tour software report shared with the property manager, giving a documented record of route completion that supplements the officer's daily activity report narrative.
