Armed Officer

An armed officer in California must hold a valid guard card and a separate firearm permit issued by BSIS, commonly called the exposed firearm permit, which requires additional firearms training, a psychological evaluation, and its own renewal cycle distinct from the base guard registration. Carrying a firearm on a private security post without both documents current is a licensing violation regardless of the officer's actual competence with the weapon.

On a real armed post — a bank, a jewelry store, an armored transport function, or a high-risk site the client has assessed as warranting it — the presence of a firearm changes everything about the post's risk profile, use-of-force exposure, and insurance requirements, which is why many clients who could staff a post armed still choose not to; adding a firearm adds liability that isn't automatically offset by additional safety.

A serious and recurring failure mode is treating the firearm permit as the only training that matters, when in practice de-escalation, judgment about when force is and is not justified, and legal exposure for using a firearm are the harder and more consequential skills — California law does not give an armed private security officer materially broader legal authority to use force than an unarmed one; the standard is still reasonableness under the circumstances, and it is heavily scrutinized after the fact.

A properly run armed post has clear post orders defining exactly what the firearm is and is not authorized to be used for, requires the officer to document any time the weapon is drawn even if not fired, and treats the firearm permit's renewal and range qualification requirements as a scheduled compliance task rather than something remembered only when it lapses.
