Earthquake & Disaster Readiness for Sacramento Properties

15 min · Starter· 3-question practice quiz PPO #122730

The short version

Drop, Cover, and Hold On during shaking — do not run outside. For Sacramento specifically, flood and levee risk, extreme heat, and wildfire smoke are the higher-probability events, and every property should have a written continuity plan and posted assembly point.

Earthquake — Drop, Cover, Hold On

  • DROP to hands and knees before the shaking drops you.
  • COVER your head and neck under a sturdy table; if none, against an interior wall away from windows.
  • HOLD ON to your shelter and move with it until shaking stops.
  • Do not run outside during shaking — falling glass and facade material is the main injury source.
  • Afterward: check for gas smell, injuries, and structural damage. Expect aftershocks.

Sacramento-specific risk

  • Flood and levee: much of the region sits behind levees. Know your flood zone and your evacuation route before winter.
  • Extreme heat: cooling-center locations, welfare checks on elderly residents, and hydration plans for outdoor staff and officers.
  • Wildfire smoke: AQI thresholds for outdoor work, filtration in common areas, and N95 availability.
  • Power shutoffs: gate and access control failure planning — how do residents and fire apparatus get in when the gate has no power?

The plan every property should have written down

  • Emergency contact tree, including who calls the security provider.
  • Assembly point and headcount owner.
  • Utility shutoff locations, with photos, in a shared folder.
  • Vulnerable-resident list, kept privately and shared only with responders.
  • 72-hour supplies for on-site staff: water, light, radio, first aid.
  • Annual review at a board or safety meeting, with the date recorded in the minutes.
