Placement is most of the effect
A uniformed officer standing near the entrance where every customer passes changes behavior for the entire store. The same officer sitting in a back room changes nothing except your invoice. This sounds obvious, and it is still the single most common thing we fix when taking over an underperforming retail post.
The second placement decision is the high-shrink aisle. Every store knows which two or three aisles account for most of its loss. A roving pattern that touches those aisles unpredictably, with a greeting rather than surveillance, moves shrink more than an extra camera does.
What a retail post should be instructed to do
- Greet — acknowledgment at the door is a documented deterrent and a customer-service win at the same time
- Rove the known high-shrink aisles on an unpredictable pattern
- Support opening and closing, including staff escorts to vehicles after dark
- Document incidents with photos and clear descriptions usable in a police report
- De-escalate customer conflicts before staff has to engage
- Never chase, never physically detain outside strictly defined limits — that is where liability lives
Where a guard is not the answer
Organized retail crime — coordinated groups clearing shelves and leaving in a waiting vehicle — is not solved by one officer. That requires plate documentation, coordination with local law enforcement, and often a policy change about what staff engage with at all. We will tell you when that is what you are facing rather than selling you hours that will not fix it.
Similarly, theft happening after hours is a patrol problem, not a post problem, and costs a fraction as much to address.
