Two separate risks: fire and smoke

Sacramento itself sits in the valley, but wildfire smoke from foothill and Sierra fires regularly affects regional air quality even when the fire itself is many miles away. Foothill and outlying communities we also serve — Auburn, Grass Valley, Meadow Vista, Foresthill — face direct wildfire risk in addition to smoke, and should have an evacuation plan specific to their area's terrain and road access.

Readiness steps

• Check your property's Cal Fire hazard severity zone designation if you're in or near foothill terrain — this affects both risk and, often, insurance and defensible-space requirements.
• Keep N95 or better respirator masks on hand for smoke days; cloth masks do not filter fine particulate matter effectively.
• Check AirNow.gov or a similar official air-quality index before extended outdoor activity during fire season, rather than judging by visible haze alone.
• If you're in a wildfire-prone area, know your evacuation zone and at least two route options in case one road is closed.
• Sign up for Sacramento County or your local county's emergency alert system so evacuation orders reach you directly.
