What a PPO is — and why the number matters
A Private Patrol Operator license is what legally allows a company to provide security guard services for hire in California. Summit Force operates under PPO #122730. Any company quoting you patrol or guard service without a PPO number on the contract is operating unlawfully — that is the first thing a property manager should check.
Core requirements
- Be at least 18 and pass a DOJ/FBI background check.
- Meet BSIS experience requirements — verifiable, documented security experience, typically expressed in hours of compensated, supervisory-level work, or a qualifying degree plus experience.
- Pass the PPO / Qualified Manager written examination.
- Carry the liability insurance BSIS requires and keep it continuously in force.
- Register a business entity and comply with employer obligations: workers' comp, payroll tax, EDD registration.
The application, realistically
- Documented experience is where most applicants stall. Start collecting signed employer verifications years before you apply.
- Corporations and LLCs must designate a Qualified Manager who holds the qualification personally.
- Expect the background and experience review to take months, not days.
- Once licensed, your PPO number must appear on advertising, contracts, vehicles, and officer identification per BSIS rules.
Running it after you get it
- Maintain training records for every registered officer — BSIS can audit them.
- Keep employer registration current for each guard you employ.
- Renew on schedule; a lapsed PPO means every contract you are servicing is exposed.
- Post orders, insurance certificates, and incident documentation are what keep clients — and defend you when something goes wrong.
